Middletown Islamic Center officials hope to start construction next year on a free outpatient medical clinic next to their center on Ryerson Road in New Hampton.
They had planned to build the clinic for years, said Dr. Quazi Al-Tariq, who was a driving force behind the construction of the Islamic center. It opened in 2009, built with donated money, equipment and expertise.
They hope to replicate the same model in building the clinic — Al-Tariq said he has gotten a number of area doctors and nurses to volunteer, and he is hoping to find a contractor to volunteer labor. He said they are raising money now, and they hope to break ground next year.
Al-Tariq said he views the clinic as another way of serving God, by helping people. The clinic won’t check incomes, he said; anyone who needs medical help will be able to walk in and get it.
