John Faso creates NY-19 campaign website

Though Kinderhook Republican John Faso hasn’t officially said he’s running for the 19th Congressional District, his website may lead you to believe otherwise.

A website and Facebook page quietly launched for Faso today. The 62-year-old Republican was the minority leader of the state Assembly from 1998-2002 and the endorsed Republican gubernatorial nominee against Eliot Spitzer in 2006. Spitzer won by a landslide.

Faso filed paperwork to form an exploratory committee on July 1 with the Federal Election Commission, allowing him to test the waters of a run.

On the “about” section of his website, Faso says he currently serves as a board member at the Rockefeller Institute of Government and although he lost against Spitzer, he raised issues like the state property tax cap that, he claims, he proposed.

“I’ve lived here and served here; now I’m hoping to earn your support to be that voice in Washington for you and your family,” Faso says on his website.

According to the FEC, an exploratory committee is not considered a political committee and does not have to register or file reports as long as its activities are limited to “testing the waters” and it does not engage in campaigning. But the name of the committee and statements by committee staff, must not refer to the individual as a candidate.

A search of Google for also reveals that the website also has the backbone of a full campaign website , complete with an “issues” page with headlines that include reducing the size and cost of government, healthcare reform and creating jobs. It’s unclear if the issues are Faso’s or are just the boilerplate issues that come ready-made with every campaign website.

The 19th Congressional District spans 11 counties, including all of Ulster and Sullivan counties.
