Teachout picks up Working Families Party endorsement

Democrat Zephyr Teachout, the Fordham law professor who’s running for the 19th Congressional District, has picked up the endorsement of the Working Families Party.

Working Families Party Director Bill Lipton called Teachout a “great fit for her district” and said party activists in the district are ready to support her.

“We’re thrilled to announce WFP’s endorsement of Zephyr Teachout for Congress,” Lipton said. “Zephyr is fearless, independent-minded, and will stand up for working families against the big money donors and wealthy insiders who have rigged the economy in their favor. She’s a great fit for her district, and WFP activists in the 19th are ready to support her grassroots, people-powered campaign.”

The endorsement from the left-wing party to some may have been par for the course. Teachout, who ran for governor against incumbent Andrew Cuomo in 2014, almost snatched the endorsement of the Working Families Party away from Cuomo during its convention.

Cuomo ended up winning the Working Families Party endorsement and his reelection bid. But in December Teachout joined the Working Families Party in endorsing Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for president. Teachout has also hired Phillip Leber, the Hudson Regional political director of the Working Families Party as her senior adviser for her campaign.
