First debate between Teachout and Faso is next week

Democrat Zephyr Teachout and Republican John Faso will square off in their first of three debates next week in Albany as they vie to fill New York’s 19th Congressional District.

The first debate is scheduled for Sept. 15 and will be held at The Linda, the performing arts center of WAMC, a regional public radio station on Central Avenue.

The debate will be hosted by Alan Chartock, president and CEO of WAMC, Allison Dunne, WAMC’s Hudson Valley bureau chief and Times Union columnist Casey Seiler.

The event goes from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public, but requires reservations that can be found here. It’ll also be be broadcast live over WAMC’s 29 radio frequencies and at

Teachout, a 44-year-old Fordham Law School professor and anti-corruption crusader, ran an insurgent gubernatorial campaign to the left of Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2014. She lost, but came away with a surprising upside in the governor’s otherwise lopsided victory: a majority of votes in 30 of the state’s 62 counties, including large swaths of upstate.

Faso is a lawyer, former state Assembly GOP minority leader and lobbyist from Columbia County who has run on statewide tickets for comptroller and governor.

The more debates are scheduled for next month. On Oct. 13 a debate will be moderated by “New York Now” Managing Editor Matt Ryan and streamed on and from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A third debate will be moderated by Capital Tonight host Liz Benjamin on Oct. 24 and be available to watch at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on YNN and Times Warner Cable.

The 19th Congressional District includes all of Ulster and Sullivan counties.
