Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano, a Democrat, has officially announced his reelection campaign for for mayor.

DeStefano made the announcement in front of supporters at a June 12 fundraiser in Middletown, according to Goshen-based Focus Media. DeStefano has served as mayor since 2010.

“These past eight years are only the beginning to moving our great city forward,” DeStefano said in a release. “We now have the house in order and the investments are being made from both the public and private sectors that will help revitalize our downtown, our neighborhoods and the city as a whole.”

In the release, DeStefano touts attracting Touro College into the former Horton Hospital, Fei Tian college and high school to the former Middletown Psychiatric Center, staying under the state tax levy cap for the last two years and using the city’s water supply to generate revenue.

He also touts reductions in crime and attracting $17.5 million in grants to the city last year and “over $30 million in outside grants for the city’s residents to be invested over the next 18 months.”

DeStefano will be running for reelection with fellow Democrat Alderman-at-large J. Miguel Rodrigues.

“Together we’ve worked hard to get this city back on track over the past eight years and now we need to sustain this momentum. The mayor and I will continue to work with the Common Council and all of the city’s departments to put the needs of our residents first,” Rodrigues said in the release.

DeStefano had $47,795.12 in his campaign account as January, according to state campaign records.
