Actress Diane Neal joins roster of NY19 candidates

The six Democrats who have been raising money and courting support for months in hopes of challenging Republican Rep. John Faso this year have new company: a TV and film actress who lives in Ulster County and has launched an independent campaign for New York’s 19th Congressional District seat.

Diane Neal, a 42-year-old Hurley resident who played Casey Novak on the TV series “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit,” registered as a candidate last week, and got a burst of national media attention on Wednesday after tweeting about her campaign (slogan: “Empathy & Reason”) and giving an extended interview to the Kingston Freeman. She told the Freeman: “I’m a little Libertarian, I’m a lot liberal, mostly progressive, but I have this amazing ability to be able to take really complicated policy and break it down into edible sound bites, which is something most progressive liberals cannot do.”

Neal must collect 3,500 petition signatures by July 31 to run.
