Rhodes wins straw poll after forum for NY19 Dem candidates

Gareth Rhodes scored the highest of the six Democrats hoping to challenge Republican Rep. John Faso in an audience straw poll taken after the candidates spoke at a forum in Mamakating on Saturday, the Sullivan County Democratic Committee announced Tuesday.

Committee Chairwoman Donna Schick said that 45 of the roughly 100 attendees cast votes to rank each of the Democratic contenders for New York’s 19th Congressional District. Fifteen people made Rhodes their top preference, the most first-place votes among the six candidates, and David Clegg came in second with 11 first-place votes.

Rhodes also won in overall scoring after the committee assigned six points for first place votes, five points for second, four points for third, and so on. The results were as follows: Rhodes, 191; Antonio Delgado, 177; David Clegg, 170; Brian Flynn, 146; Jeff Beals, 116; and Pat Ryan, 62.

Ryan couldn’t attend the event, but recorded opening and closing statements that were shown to attendees on a TV.
