Anagnostakis proposes school-funding task force

Orange County legislator and state Senate candidate Mike Anagnostakis called on Monday for the creation of a task force to find a better way to fund New York’s public schools, blaming school taxes for homeowners leaving the state and Senate Republicans for failing to solve the problem.

Anagnostakis, one of two Republicans competing to run for the 39th Senate District seat Bill Larkin is vacating, suggested a task force consisting of one Republican and one Democrat from both the Senate and Assembly and a representative from both the governor’s and comptroller’s offices. He would push for himself to be chairman of the task force.

“The number one reason people leave is because of the outrageously high school tax homeowners pay,” Anagnostakis said in a press release on Monday. “Many other states have figured out how to shift this burden off the homeowner – but not New York State! I will not mince words: Republicans – in control of the State Senate for a generation – have failed us by doing nothing to solve this problem. After a generation, time has run out for inaction.”
