Nurses, public employees unions endorse Skoufis for Senate

A state nurse’s union and a national union for state and local government workers have endorsed Assemblyman James Skoufis in the 39th Senate District race, adding to a litany of labor endorsements for the Woodbury Democrat.

The support announced on Friday came from the New York State Nurses Association, which represents about 42,000 registered nurses, and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents more than 1.6 million working and retired workers.

“This campaign continues to be empowered by strong labor support, and these endorsements from NYSNA and AFSCME will continue that momentum,” Skoufis said in a statement.

Marva Wade, chairwoman of the nurse association’s political action committee called Skoufis a “tireless advocate” for nurses and patients. “His long-standing support for safe staffing legislation has been critical in our fight for maintaining quality health care,” Wade said. “Skoufis’ voice is one that we know that we can count on, and that’s why we’re proud to endorse him.”

Skoufis’ previous union endorsements include the New York State AFL-CIO, New York State United Teachers, the Civil Service Employees Association, Communication Workers of America, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the New York State Building and Trades Council and the New York State Union of Police Associations.
