Skoufis leads Basile by 2-to-1 in campaign cash

The latest campaign finance reports for the 39th Senate District race showed Democrat James Skoufis with twice as much money on hand as Republican Tom Basile, and both parties – especially the Senate Republicans – pumping large sums into their candidates’ accounts.

Skoufis, a third-term assemblyman from Woodbury, had a little over $300,000 in his coffers as of Sept. 20, while Basile, a Stony Point councilman and communications consultant, had almost $151,000. Skoufis had raised $75,000 and spent $227,000 in the preceding nearly three weeks. Basile reported raising $16,000 and spending $260,000.

The Senate Republican Campaign Committee moved $288,000 into Basile’s account on two dates in September. The Democratic Senate Campaign Committee transferred $165,000 to Skoufis on two dates.

In addition to what the two candidates are raising and spending, at least two groups have joined the arms race by paying for their own mailers to praise one candidate and bash the other. The New York Republican State Committee has done mailings on Basile’s behalf, and Fighting for Our Future – a PAC affiliated with New York State United Teachers – has sent mailers for Skoufis.
