Delgado endorses formal rival Ryan for Ulster executive

Rep. Antonio Delgado endorsed Pat Ryan for Ulster County executive this week, lending his support for the fellow Democrat and former competitor who finished second behind Delgado in a seven-way primary last June for the 19th Congressional District seat.

“I’ve gotten to know him well over the last few years, and it’s clear he has the dedication and vision to make a real difference in Ulster County,” Delgado said in a press release from Ryan’s campaign. “From his time serving our country in Iraq to starting his own business, he knows how to bring people together around a common goal. He’s the leader our community needs to invest in our future and grow our economy, leaving no one behind.”

The county Democratic Committee nominated Ryan last month to run in an April 30 special election to fill the county executive seat that Mike Hein vacated until Hein’s term expires at the end of the year. But Ryan could face a June 25 primary in his bid for a full, four-year term if former Woodstock Moran Jeff Moran petitions to run, a decision that Moran said on Facebook on Thursday that he plans to make over the next week. (Pat Strong, another Democrat who competed with Ryan for the nomination, ended her campaign after the party backed Ryan.)

Republicans plan to field a candidate for the special election but haven’t named one yet.
