GOP candidate opens campaign account for NY-19 race

Ulster County resident Mike Roth is the first Republican to signal interest in challenging freshman Rep. Antonio Delgado next year for New York’s 19th Congressional District seat, announcing his candidacy on Facebook on Aug. 3 after creating a fundraising committee with the Federal Election Commission a week earlier.

The Wawarsing resident declared on Facebook that he was running for Congress because the nation and 19th District are “in a perilous state of affairs,” with Democrats “trying to destroy our Republic by any means necessary. “

“From attempted treason, in order to overthrow legally elected President Trump, to flooding our country with illegal immigrants, Democrats are creating chaos where legal system is used to delay, stop of reverse actions of our President,” Roth wrote. “Our society is collapsing in front of our eyes where a few elected representatives, who hate our country, are running the whole Democrats’ Party toward Socialism, where ALL citizens will be at mercy of the totalitarian government. “

He went on to say that upstate New Yorkers are “living under Commies’ boot,” that elites don’t care about them, and that upstate new York must separate from New York City.

Ulster Republican Chairman Roger Rascoe said Tuesday that five or six Republicans in all have expressed interest in running, and that a couple are close to announcing their candidacies and beginning their fundraising efforts. He said the GOP chairmen of the 11 counties in the 19th District will meet to discuss the candidates and potential competition.

“We’re looking to see if maybe there will be a primary next year,” he said.

Delgado, a Rhinebeck Democrat, ousted one-term Republican Rep. John Faso in November after winning a seven-way Democratic primary last June. He reported more than $1 million in his campaign coffers as of June 30.
