No rest for the weary

One word: Summer.

For most students, this means vacation, hanging out with friends, playing video games, staying up late, sleeping in and many other things.

For student-athletes who are playing a sport in the fall, it means kicking it into gear and getting into shape. The summer is full of fun and awesome memories shared with friends and family where school is a distant thought and nowhere in sight.

You know what they say though, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” That’s just the case. I was at my aunt’s house in New Jersey early in August with my friend Sam enjoying some vacation time when he asked when soccer started. I thought to myself for a second, and responded with “sooner than I thought.”

It’s always on the back of my mind of course, but somehow it seemed like my upperclassmen friends had just received their diplomas the other day. Needless to say, as soon as I got home from the beach, I was running around the track for who knows how long. And before I could count up those laps around the track, that third Monday in August had rolled around. 8 a.m. sharp. Bring your running shoes. The first session of our two-a-days had begun.

Four miles coach instructs. Off we go, and so does the season. Off to a running start.
