Golf: Marotta, Ryan continue strong seasons

Wet, rainy conditions couldn’t stop Monroe-Woodbury senior Nick Marotta and Warwick junior Meg Ryan from posting season-low rounds Monday.

Marotta fired a 2-under-par 34 at Falkirk Country Club in Central Valley to help Monroe-Woodbury to an 198-227 win over Pine Bush.

He birdied both par-5s (No. 1 and No. 9) and had seven straight pars in between. Marotta’s round was helped by a pair of hand warmers, given to him by teammate Scott Clark.

“It was really cold out there today,” said Marotta, who will attend Division I Bryant and try out for the team. “I was just trying to keep my hands warm.”

Marotta shot a 1-under 35 at the Golf  Club at Mansion Ridge in Monroe last week. He is averaging 37.8 strokes per round and has 1.83 stroke average over par through six matches.

“I’m playing pretty good,” said Marotta,  “The best part about my game right now are my drives. I’m hitting them wherever I want them to go and that’s making things so much easier for me.”

Ryan, who owns three of the top four girls’ scores this season, shot a 1-over 37 at Warwick Valley Country Club, her home course.
