Delaware Valley represented itself well in a deep Hurricane Classic tournament sending two wrestlers into the finals and placing fifth in the 28-team field Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa.
Junior 138-pounder Jalen Palmer and senior 182-pounder Martin Strenk finished second to nationally-ranked wrestlers.
Palmer was pinned by Central Dauphin’s Tyson Dippery, ranked No. 9 nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, in 5:06. Strenk lost by technical fall 15-0 to Wyoming Seminary’s Eric Morris, the No. 2 wrestler in the country.
Delaware Valley scored 119 points. Wyoming Seminary, the No. 2 team in the nation according to Amateur Wrestling News, won the tournament with 245 points. Central Dauphin, ranked 14th nationally, was second with 163. Phillipsburg (N.J.) was third (157.5) and Big Spring took fourth (123).
Delaware Valley sophomore Frankie Carrozza placed third at 132 pounds, defeating Tyler Ponte of Wyoming Seminary 2-1. Carrozza was 5-1 in the tournament. Ponte handed Carrozza his only loss – 4-2 in the quarterfinals.
Senior 220-pounder Jack Fagan and sophomore 195-pounder Matt Wagner each took fifth for Delaware Valley. Fagan defeated Tyler Schermerhorn of Hazleton 5-3 in the consolation. He lost to eventual champion Garrett Ryan of Wyoming Seminary 9-1 in the semifinals. Ryan is ranked 9th in the nation.
Wagner won by technical fall 16-0 over Boyertown’s Jordan Wertz in his consolation final.
