Girls basketball state rankings; a look at the week ahead

The latest New York State girls’ basketball rankings have been released by the New York State Sportswriters’ Association. I’ll post the top three teams and any Section 9 teams here, but for the full list, follow this link.

Marlboro, No. 23 in last week’s poll, gets bumped as Onteora joins Class B instead. In Marlboro’s only game last week, the team beat Highland, 42-40.

Millbrook, No. 12 last week in Class C, drops just two spots to No. 14 despite a 22-point loss to Coleman Catholic and a 12-point loss to Spackenkill the next day.

Tri-Valley, No. 23 in last week’s Class C poll, also drops out. Chester, at 8-0 in Division V and 12-3 overall, still getting no respect in the state poll. I’ll have a story on the Hambeltonians’ program turning around in Thursday’s paper.

Coleman Catholic is 12-3, not 11-3 as listed on the poll.

1. Ossining (12-4, Section 1)

With the regular season winding down in Section 9 – the playoff tournament seeding meeting will be held next Thursday – let’s take a look at some of the big games on the schedule this week.

Tuesday

Marlboro at Red Hook, 6:30 p.m.

Warwick at Newburgh Free Academy, 7 p.m.

Wednesday

Onteora at Millbrook, 5:45 p.m.

Thursday

Washingtonville at Warwick, 6:30 p.m.

Friday

Monticello at Cornwall, 6:30 p.m.

It will be a big week for Warwick, with a non-league game at Newburgh and a battle for first place in Division II on Thursday against Washigntonville. Can the Wildcats keep the hot streak going and snag a division title or will they stumble against a pair of strong Class AA opponents?

On Friday, Monticello, at 9-5, heads to Division III-leading Cornwall. The Dragons already have the division wrapped up, but it’s a chance for Monticello to show what it can do against a good team.

In the MHAL, Marlboro and Red Hook tangle tonight. Both of those teams have had up-and-down seasons, but both also have plenty of talent. I have them tied for the Division II lead right now, so the winner likely gets a confidence boost heading into the MHAL tournament. Red Hook won the first game between the teams, 56-47, on Jan. 11.
