MHAL girls basketball semifinals; live updates; video

Check out the video above for highlights from the games as well as interviews with Wallkill’s Lisa Bouffard, Rachel Simon and Chelsea Murphy as well as Onteora’s Julia Occhi and Adrianna Decicco. My camera battery died during the Wallkill interviews, so that wasn’t as long as I had hoped….sorry about that.

Wallkill and Onteora will meet in Thursday’s MHAL final at 5 p.m. at SUNY Ulster. The teams did not play one another during the regular season.

Wallkill has appeared in five of the last six MHAL finals, winning just once, in 2011. Onteora hasn’t appeared in the MHAL final since 2001 and the Indians haven’t won a MHAL title since 1999.

One thing that stood out about the two games on Tuesday was that the Section 9 Class B bracket should be pretty competitive. Coleman Catholic, which had not lost to a Section 9 team this season until Tuesday night, figured to be the top seed, but Onteora’s win over the Statesmen might now give them the edge. Marlboro, of course, drops down from Class A this year, so all three of those teams should be in the mix in the Section 9 tournament as well.

Wallkill in on track to get the No. 1 seed in the Class A tournament, but Cornwall, Red Hook and Goshen should be competitive in that bracket, too.

Wallkillcenter Heather Kiczek (32) fights Marlboro center Katelyn Fabrizio (24) as she goes up for a shot. The MHAL Girls Basketball American Conference Championship game between the Marlboro Dukes and the Walkill Panthers was held Tuesday evening, February 19, 2013, at the SUNY Ulster Gymnasium. The Panthers defeated the Dukes 60- 42. (David Doonan photo/for the Times Herald-Record)
