HIGHLAND FALLS – As the game was winding down, one of the Spackenkill videographers sitting next to me in the top row of the bleachers leaned over and asked if this was one of the best games I’ve seen this season.
I told him it was one of the best high school basketball games I’ve seen – period.
No. 2 James I. O’Neill rallied from a 9-point deficit midway through the third quarter to force overtime – and only after Spackenkill missed a shot at the buzzer at the end of the fourth quarter.
Spackenkill missed another chance to win at the end of the first overtime.
O’Neill had its chances at the ends of the second and third overtimes, but those also couldn’t find a way to go in.
Finally, in the fourth overtime, No. 3 Spackenkill pulled away and was able to hang on for a 70-65 victory. O’Neill played the end of the game without starters Jordan Baskerville and Marquis Brown, both of whom had fouled out.
The Spartans will face No. 1 Marlboro – the defending Section 9 Class A champions – in Saturday’s Section 9 Class B championship game at SUNY New Paltz.
