Newburgh seniors Laine, Shukla world travelers

Newburgh senior tennis players Jacques Laine and Stavan Shukla recently returned from a 10-day student exchange program in Italy.

Laine and Shukla stayed in the city of  Caltagirone on the island of Sicily. Shukla’s host family, which spoke mostly Italian, taught more of the intricacies of the language.

“It was a really good experience,” said Shukla, who was in Italy from March 19-29. “We saw the sights around Sicily. It was interesting to see not only the history but how different their culture is and how similar it is.”

Shukla said Italian students will be visiting Newburgh and staying with families from April 10-20.

This wasn’t Laine’s first trip to Europe.

“I’ve been to Paris, Germany and London,” Laine.

Laine watched his brother, Samyr, compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
