Cornwall quarterback Mike White and his ace receiver, Chris Bauer, were the cover boys for the Varsity845 season preview on dynamic duos.
And for good reason. In case you haven’t seen or heard, the pair can light it up. Take Saturday, for instance, against host Saugerties. White connected with Bauer for five touchdown passes in Cornwall’s 49-0 Section 9 Class A win. With the win, Cornwall (6-1, 5-0 Class A) clinched the Class A regular-season title.
Bauer’s five touchdown catches is a new Section 9 record. White’s older brother, Joe, had held the record. Joe White caught four touchdown passes in a game three years ago.
“Chris has just been awesome this year,” said White, who along with Bauer only played in the first half, completing 12-of-17 passes for 204 yards. “I have some good receivers, but Chris is big-time. It just ran great routes today and got open. That’s what he does best.”
White and Bauer, both seniors, connected on touchdowns of 7, 8, 15, 53 and 45 yards. One came in the first quarter and four in the second. Bauer finished with six catches for 128 yards. Kevin Gangemi and Sean Meade had rushing touchdowns for the two-time defending Class A champions.
I’m still in shock,” Bauer said. “I don’t know if I can make sense of it. Down the road, I definitely think it will be a cool accomplishment.”
