Section 9 makes history with four semifinal berths

Remember the days when Section 9 football teams served as a punching bag in the state playoffs?

Well, they are long gone.

Section 9 made history this weekend when Cornwall, Chester, Marlboro and Monroe-Woodbury earned state semifinal berths. It marks the first time four Section 9 teams have reached the final four. Section 9 schools are 9-14 in the state semifinals.

Monroe-Woodbury has four of those wins (2005-08) and Chester (2011), Newburgh (2011), Wallkill (2004) and Rondout Valley (2000) have one apiece. Monroe-Woodbury (2005) and Rondout Valley are the only Section 9 teams to ever win state championships.

Before this run, three Section 9 teams had made the state semifinals twice – in 2011 and 2012. It’s also worth noting that this marks the second year in a row that three Section 9 teams have beaten Section 1 (Duchess, Rockland, Putnam and Westchester counties) schools in the state quarterfinals.

That had never happened before 2012. Indeed, Section 9 football continues to develop, making more history.
