Fischbein stepping down after season

Monroe-Woodbury wrestling coach Steve Fischbein will lead the Crusaders for his 18th and final year this season.

Fischbein, 48, who named the 1999 New York state coach of the year and has a 301-68 career record, will hand over the program to assistant coach John Gartiser, a 2002 Monroe-Woodbury graduate, next season. He hopes to remain with the team as a jayvee coach.

Monroe-Woodbury is the top seed at the Section 9 Duals, which start Tuesday, and returns nine wrestlers, who placed in the Section 9 tournament last season.

Fischbein won a Section 9 title for Monroe-Woodbury in 1983 and placed fourth in state at 98 pounds.  He won a fight with bone-marrow cancer in 2005.
