Boys’ lacrosse state rankings, video, news and notes

The second edition of the boys’ lacrosse state rankings have been released. Again, no teams from Section 9 were official ranked, although a few did merit honorable mention consideration.

Section 9’s honorable mention teams

Class A

Middletown, Valley Central, Warwick

Class B

Class C

Millbrook, Rondout Valley

Coming in Tuesday’s Times Herald-Record…a story on the Valley Central team, which is off to a red-hot 7-1 start in 2014. Of course, part of that has been the schedule. The Vikings are the first to admit that they’ve played some weak teams to this point, but this week should tell us a lot about Valley Central and where this team might be headed later in the season. Valley Central’s next three games are key: Warwick and Minisink Valley this week in some Division II battles and then they get Monroe-Woodbury on the road next week.

One big takeaway from my visit to Montgomery last week is that this Valley Central team is also built for the future. Brad Howell, Brett Jennings, Joey Falco, Hunter Cocks, Nick Russo, Jack and Joe Tofallos, Brenden Shust…this isn’t just a list of Valley Central’s top players, it’s a list of players who will be back in 2015.

So we’ll see how the Vikings fare over the second half of the regular season and in the Section 9 Class A playoffs, but this year may just be a prelude to bigger things next season.

Here are some games to watch this week…

  • Warwick at Valley Central, 6 p.m. Warwick defeated VC in the Section 9 Class A semis last year in Montgomery, so this one should be exciting. Whichever team wins gets a huge leg up in the race for the Division II title.

  • Goshen at Wallkill, 7 p.m. Wallkill is off to a rough start this season…could this be Goshen’s first win in program history?

  • Valley Central at Minisink Valley, 4 p.m. Minisink Valley is off to a 4-3 start, but the Warriors just might have more wins with an easier schedule. They’ve played some tough teams from out-of-section so far. Now that it really counts, can Minisink Valley start to heat up? Or is this team a bit weaker than the strong MV teams of the past

  • Middletown at Monroe-Woodbury, 10 a.m. With Pine Bush and Kingston both off to rough starts in 2014, this game suddenly looks huge in the Division I title race. The Middies are hot at 4-1, but they haven’t played many ¬†tough teams yet. M-W has cooled off a little following a season-opening win over Warwick. Should be a good one between two up-and-coming programs.
I’ll have scores and updates on Twitter throughout the course of the season: @THR_Montgomery.¬†Look for the first baseball rankings of the season to be released on Wednesday (or so I hear). Also, I’d imagine the girls’ basketball all-state teams will be released fairly soon.
