Burke Catholic assistant football coach Ed Van Curen fired a month after being demoted

After leading John S. Burke Catholic to the Section 9 Class C championship in 2013, Ed Van Curen was demoted last month, replaced by former Army offensive coordinator Kevin Ross.

When hired, Ross told the Times Herald-Record that he and Van Curen “fit like hand and glove and are cut from the same cloth.” As it turns out, Ross and Van Curen don’t fit at all. Several team sources have confirmed that Van Curen was removed as defensive coordinator on Monday.

Ross, the son of Bobby Ross, former coach of the San Diego Chargers, Detroit Lions, Georgia Tech and Army, and Van Curen did not return calls seeking comment on Monday.

Van Curen, who does not teach at Burke Catholic, did take to Twitter and wrote: “Wow from building a football program in ‘02 to being terminated only months after winning a Sect 9 Title in ‘14 only.”

Van Curen added on Twitter: “I would like to thank all of the parents, players, coaches & alumni of the BC Football Progrm throughout my 12yrs @ BC & esp last 5yrs as HFC.”

One Burke Catholic player told the Times Herald-Record: “Nobody knows what happened. We are all shocked.”

Several team sources said that Ross, hired in early-March, and Van Curen “didn’t mesh.” Van Curen told the Times Herald-Record that he had no problem being demoted when Ross was hired. Van Curen went 32-17 in five seasons. Burke Catholic lost to Rye Neck 47-6 in the first round of the Class C state playoffs last year.

Several of Van Curen’s former Burke Catholic players wrote tributes to him on Twitter on Monday.

Sophomore Josh Fenical posted a picture of he and Van Curen, including “going to miss this dude.”

Fenical’s brother, Justin, Tweeted to Van Curen: “Didn’t grow up with a father but this guy has to be the closest thing to it, love you VC best of luck in the future.”

Star Burke Catholic two-way lineman Brandon Rawlins Tweeted to Van Curen: “love you too coach best of luck always gonna be family.”
