VIDEO: Section 9 first-round leader Ethan DeForest

Rondout Valley senior Ethan DeForest is 18 holes away from joining his brothers Ben, Andrew and Chris as a Section 9 champion.

DeForest fired an even-par 72 in the first round of the section tournament at the Golf Club in Mansion Ridge. He was 3-under-par through 14 and made his first of three straight bogeys on the par-5, 15th. One of DeForest’s best shots of the day came on his third swing on the par-4, 18th. He hit a wedge from about 40 yards out to within an inch of the cup.

“That shot definitely makes the three (holes) before that feel a little bit better,” DeForest said. “But, still there are some things I need to work on. I could have been better, definitely putting.”

DeForest said he didn’t have a number in mind to shoot on Monday.

“It all depends on the conditions especially on this course,” DeForest said. “You can go low or you can shoot 80. This course is weird like that. I definitely wanted to go under (par). But, I’m OK with even (par).”
