Recap with video: Chester defeats Haldane

SLATE HILL – Not this year, Haldane.

Behind a four-hitter by Marcella Brosnan, Chester defeated Haldane 4-1 in the first round of the Class C state softball tournament on Thursday at Minisink Valley. Haldane had beaten Chester in the same game in two of the last three years.

You could make the case that Chester is playing as well as it has all season. The Hambletonians defeated S.S. Seward 12-6 last Saturday in the Section 9 Class C championship, after losing to the Spartans twice during the regular-season. Next up for Chester?

The Hambletonians (18-5) play Long Island’s Pierson in the Class C state quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue.

To go along with her four-hitter, Brosnan had two hits and an RBI. Chester scored two runs in the top of the first inning and Haldane came back with a run in its half of the inning. Clinging to a 2-1 lead, Chester scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to seal the milestone win.

Second baseman Athena Grohl stole home on a double steal with Erin Dunn, who took second, to make it 3-1. Dunn later scored on an RBI single by Kasey Palmer. Chester lost a wild game to Haldane, 10-7, in the first round of last season’s Class C state playoffs. Chester used a four-run fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead over Haldane. Haldane responded with four runs in the top of the fifth. In 2011, Haldane beat Chester 4-0 in the first round.
