Section 9 swimming/diving finals this weekend

The Section 9 girls’ swimming and diving finals will be held this weekend at Valley Central High School in Montgomery. I’ll have a preview page in Thursday’s newspaper, so keep your eyes open for that.

Here are some tidbits to hold you over until then.

IF YOU GO
Section 9 swimming and diving championships
Valley Central High School, Montgomery
Thursday: Swimming preliminaries, 4:30 p.m.
Friday: Diving preliminaries and finals, 4 p.m.
Saturday: Swimming finals, 2 p.m.

WHAT TO WATCH
On the boards: Minisink Valley senior Emily Wilson won the OCIAA diving competition on Oct. 24, following sophomore teammate Erin Clifford, who had won the event in 2013. They’ll face some tough competition on Friday in the form of Warwick senior Therese Mandracchia, the defending Section 9 champion.

Made to be broken: At the OCIAA championships, swimmers broke four meet records. It’s tough to see that many records falling at the Section 9 meet, but keep your eye on the clock in the 100 breaststroke. Minisink Valley senior Jessica Crumm swam a 1:06.83 at the county finals, only 0.20 seconds off the Section 9 meet record of 1:06.63 set by Washingtonville’s Morganne Klein in 2009.

Finally a finalist: Washingtonville eighth grader Paige Bacigal has been a mainstay of recent Section 9 championships. You’ll recognize her as the girl who used to hold up the card displaying the event name, leading the finalists around the pool deck for the boys’ and girls’ championships in recent seasons. Well, barring a DQ in the prelims, Bacigal will be a finalist this year. She’s a member of Washingtonville’s 400 freestyle relay team, which placed second with a state meet qualifying time at the OCIAA meet two weeks ago.

Washingtonville's Paige Bacigal leads the 50 freestyle finalists to the starting blocks during the 2012 Section 9 championships. Bacigal, now in eighth grade, will compete in the finals this year. (TH-R file photo)
