Great new tournament – Slam Dunk Cancer Games – set for Jan. 3

Attention basketball fans: The place to be on Jan. 3 is Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh.

The Mount is holding a festival-style boys’ basketball tournament, which should feature some great basketball. Even better, it’s for a great cause.

The Section 9 chapter of the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) has put together the inaugural Slam Dunk Cancer Games at Mount Saint Mary. Ten local teams will compete in the fundraiser for the Hudson Valley Cancer Resource Center, which provides life-saving programs and services to cancer patients and their families free of charge.

Support includes financial assistance, prescription assistance, co-pay assistance, lodging during treatment, insurance information, medical supplies, career and cancer information, support groups, hospice information, bereavement care, palliative care, camps, retreats, legacy trips and scholarships.

The Orange County Basketball Officials Association will be donating their time to officiate the games and the 10 teams are soliciting donations. Among others, Monticello coach Chris Russo, Washingtonville coach Todd Rose and S.S. Seward coach Rob Gravelle helped put the event together.

“As coaches, we know that our players work hard on and off the court,” Rose said. “Our common goal is to encourage them to help make a difference in their communities by being advocates for those in the Hudson Valley affected by cancer. All ten coaches and all the Basketball Officials hope to have a large turn-out in support of such a worthy cause.”
