Army offers Newburgh RB Aaron Forbes

The scholarship offers just keep coming for Newburgh star running back Aaron Forbes.

Within the last three weeks, Division II American International College and Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) schools Villanova, New Hampshire and Maine have made Forbes full scholarship offers.

The field competing for Forbes became even more crowded on Monday when Army offered Forbes, who helped Newburgh to the Class AA state championship game this year.

“I’m very excited and honored to get an offer from a school like Army,” said Forbes, a two-time Varsity845 first-team all-star, who rushed for 1,544 yards and a school-record 24 touchdowns for Newburgh. “It’s nice to know that a lot of schools believe in my ability. It’s been very stressful, but it’s a good stress. A lot of athletes don’t have the choices I have. I’m excited to tell you my decision.”

Forbes – a straight-A student – said he will likely pick a college in about a week, but isn’t playing his hand. Army made a home visit to meet with him last month. Forbes said Army assistant coach John Loose called him and Newburgh coach Bill Bianco with the offer on Monday.

If Forbes chooses Army, he would join another former Newburgh star on the roster. Sophomore Steven Johnson is a defensive back for the Black Knights. He helped Newburgh to the Class AA state championship game in 2011.

Johnson attended USMA Prep for a year, before joining the Black Knights. Army went 4-8 last season under first-year coach Jeff Monken, losing to rival Navy for the 13th year in a row.

“I’m excited about all of the offers Aaron has received over the last few weeks,” Bianco said. “I knew he was a great player the whole time, but other schools are realizing that. Aaron is a talented kid. He’s a great player and does all the right things in the classroom. I’m just excited for him.”
