Top 10 boys’ basketball rankings: Feb. 2 edition

  1. Middletown (10-2): You know who deserves a pop? Middletown senior guard Shabon Burton, bordering on an unsung hero. Can make plays, solid defender and very consistent.
  2. Valley Central (7-3): The No. 2 ranking comes with a warning. The second-ranked team in the poll has lost in the last two weeks (See Pine Bush and Burke Catholic).
  3. Monroe-Woodbury (7-5): Coach Ron Montalto, also Monroe-Woodbury’s athletic director, is looking for a new varsity football coach. After that call in the Super Bowl, Pete Carroll might be available.
  4. Pine Bush (8-5): Check out Powell coming on for Pine Bush. That would be freshman Brandon Powell, the younger brother of star Justin Powell.
  5. Burke Catholic (8-4): Lost two games to Section 9 opponents in the span of eight days (Monroe-Woodbury and Pine Bush), a rarity in previous years. But let’s turn the page. Big week for the Eagles with Valley Central and Newburgh on the schedule.
  6. Red Hook (11-1): This one is for the Twitter account @RaiderRedZone. By the way, follow me on Twitter @justinrod845.
  7. Washingtonville (8-5): Had a near-miss, losing a tight one to Pine Bush over the weekend. But another prime time match-up looms. The Wizards host Middletown on Tuesday.
  8. Monticello (9-3): The Panthers getting ready for its annual game at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at SUNY Sullivan. Streaking Monticello takes on Liberty on Friday in the fundraiser.
  9. Saugerties (9-2): Gets a rematch with Poughkeepsie on Friday, exactly a month after the newly minted Section 9 school handed Saugerties one of its two losses this season.
  10. Highland (9-3): Interesting week for Highland with rival New Paltz and feisty Wallkill lined up on the schedule.
