Top 10 boys’ basketball rankings: Feb. 9 edition

  1. Middletown (11-2): Middletown plays at Burke Catholic on Friday. Looking forward to a warm embrace from
  2. Valley Central (9-3): The Vikings have won eight of nine, losing only to Middletown since mid-December.
  3. Pine Bush (10-5): Playing, perhaps, its best ball since 2000. Remember what happened that year? Pine Bush won the Section 9 Class AA title.
  4. Red Hook (13-1): Clinched its second consecutive MHAL Division II title last week, but there are plenty more of championships on the Raiders’ to-do list.
  5. Monroe-Woodbury (7-7): Senior forward Ryan Coffey, who is 6-foot-4, has been the model of consistency for the Crusaders this season.
  6. Monticello (11-3): Can clinch its first OCIAA Division III title since 2006 with a win over Cornwall on Wednesday.
  7. Saugerties (10-2): More MHAL movement up the rankings. Like Red Hook, Saugerties makes a jump in the rankings.
  8. Burke Catholic (8-6): This Burke Catholic team isn’t going to make anyone forget about Zach Rufer or Richie Douglas, but there is reason for plenty of optimism in the form of talented freshmen Tommy Garneau and Jake Pawliczak.
  9. Washingtonville (9-6): A rough week or so for Washingtonville, so the Wizards need to show us something down the stretch. Whatever you do, don’t count out the Wizards yet.
  10. Newburgh (5-8): That’s right, 5-8. Newburgh beat Monroe-Woodbury and Burke Catholic last week and, if the Goldbacks make the Section 9 tournament, they could be the team nobody wants to face.
