Borkowski second in the backstroke at state swim finals

Pine Bush senior Jake Borkowski placed second in the 100-yard backstroke at the state championships at Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon. He swam the backstroke in 51.47, trailing only Clarkstown’s Ryan Wagner, who was the state champion in a time of 51.32.

New Paltz senior Emile Kuyl and Port Jervis senior Nick Winograd both placed in a pair of events. Kuyl, who’ll swim at Johns Hopkins next year, took fourth place in the 200 individual medley (1:53.92) and was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (58.97). Winograd was fifth in the 100 freestyle (47.15) and eighth in the breaststroke (58.74).

Kuyl also swam the butterfly leg on New Paltz’s 200 medley relay team, which placed sixth in a time of 1:38.24.

Pine Bush’s 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams qualified for the finals, but both teams were disqualified on Saturday.

The other local swimmers competing included Minisink Valley’s Zack Vreeland, who took 15th place in the 100 butterfly. New Paltz’s Seamus Trzewik-Quinn placed 15th in the 100 backstroke, just ahead of Kingston’s Alec Tocco, who took 18th place.

Newburgh Free Academy senior Charlie Broe was presented with a sportsmanship award from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

Warwick senior diver Nick Rusek placed third in the diving finals on Friday night with a score of 566.65. The results posted Friday night incorrectly listed Rusek in fourth place.
