Team records:  Chester (14-6); Haldane (16-4)

 How they got here:  As the fourth seed, Chester rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to defeat second-seeded Rhinebeck 62-47 in the Section 9 Class C championship. Chester beat top-seeded John A. Coleman Catholic in the semifinals; Haldane put away Tuckahoe 56-45 to earn its second straight Section 1 title.

Up next: The Chester-Haldane winner plays Stony Brook in the Class C state quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday at SUNY Suffolk on Long Island.

You should know: Chester is making its first appearance in the state tournament since 2001. That year, the Hambletonians won the Section 9 Class D title. Chester received a bye in the first round of the state tournament in 2001 and lost to Haldane 60-40 in the quarterfinals … Chester and Haldane played an epic game on Jan. 23 of this year with Chester winning 63-62. Haldane entered the game as the third-ranked Class C team in the state. Haldane is now ranked 10th in the state. Chester is unranked, but should crack the new state rankings when they are released Sunday night … Chester’s Brandon Sadlier was a two-way football star for the football team, helping the Hambletonians to the Class D state championship game, and is having a breakout year on the hardwood. An explosive guard, Sadlier is averaging 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Injuries slowed him earlier in his basketball career.
