State tournament tidbits for Section 9 girls’ basketball teams

Class AA first round

  • Monroe-Woodbury (17-3) vs. Horseheads (17-4, Section 4), 6 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson City

About M-W: The Crusaders have a deep bench and head coach Linda Trapani isn’t afraid to use it. In the second half of Saturday’s Section 9 Class AA final against Newburgh, reserve guards Maya Bernsley and Sydney Harwood revived an offense that didn’t score a single point in the second quarter. About Horseheads: Winners of three straight Section 4 Class AA titles, Horseheads is led by senior forward Amanda Schiefen, who will play at Canisius next year. Click here for the Section 4 championship game story from the Star-Gazette.

Up next: The winner of this game plays Section 1 champion Ossining (20-2) at 8 p.m. on Friday at Marist. Ossining has won the last two Class AA state championships.

Class A quarterfinals

  • Wallkill (19-3) vs. Vestal or Albertus Magnus, 2 p.m. Saturday at SUNY New Paltz

About Wallkill: The Panthers will avoid Maine-Endwell in postseason play this year, having lost to M-E in the final game of the season in 2013 and 2014. Wallkill has outscored opponents by an average of 22.1 points per game this year. Here’s the game story from Wallkill’s big win over Cornwall in the Section 9 finals.

About Vestal/Magnus: Albertus Magnus, ranked No. 1 in the latest state poll, defeated Wallkill 60-51 in a non-league game in December. Magnus, which has lost to Peekskill in the Section 1 final two years in a row, finally got the better of their cross-river rivals. Here’s the game story from the Journal News.

Vestal rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit to beat Maine-Endwell in the Section 4 final. M-E had won the last two Section 4 finals over Vestal. For more on that game, check out this story from the Press & Sun Bulletin.

Magnus and Vestal play in an opening round game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at SUNY Purchase.

Class B first round

  • Spackenkill (18-2) vs. Irvington (21-1), 5 p.m. Wednesday at SUNY New Paltz

About Spackenkill: The Spartans rallied from a 19-6 first quarter deficit to beat No. 1 Marlboro in overtime in the Section 9 championship game. Spackenkill is a dangerous team from behind the 3-point arc. Here’s the game story from the Section 9 championship game.

About Irvington: One of the top programs in the state, Irvington has won five Section 1 titles in the last six seasons. Here’s the Journal News gamer from Irvington’s win over Ardsley at the County Center in White Plains.

Up next: The winner of this game hosts the Long Island champion (Carle Place of Section 8 or Hampton Bays of Section 11) in a state quarterfinal at Mount Saint Mary later this week.

Class C first round

  • Pine Plains (13-7) vs. Haldane (12-7), 5 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh

About Pine Plains: Following a crushing loss to Tri-Valley in the 2014 Section 9 Class C final, Pine Plains bounced back with a win over No. 1 Chester in this year’s final. Sophomore center Ashley Starzyk is one of Section 9’s best young players. Here’s the game story from Friday’s final.

About Haldane: Haldane defeated Alexander Hamilton to win a second straight Section 1 title. Here’s the game story from the Poughkeepsie Journal. The Haldane girls are 17-2 against Section 9 opponents in the state tournament since 1989.

Up next: The winner of this game hosts Long Island champion Pierson-Bridgehampton of Section 11 in a state quarterfinal at 6 p.m. on Friday at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh.

Class D quarterfinals

  • Eldred (17-3) vs. South Kortright (23-0), 8 p.m. Friday at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh

About Eldred: The Yellow Jackets’ three losses have come to some of Section 9’s top teams: Port Jervis (Class A) and Pine Plains and Tuxedo (both Class C schools).
