NFA star student-athletes participate in Read Across America

Students at Temple Hill Academy in New Windsor had to be star struck on Monday.

As part of Read Across America, six high-profile Newburgh Free Academy scholar-athletes visited the elementary school and shared some of their favorite books with excited students. It was quite a lineup, which included NFA’s Birgitta Anderson (tennis), Aaron Forbes (football), Da’Mani Burns (wrestling), Oliver Janvier (football), Katie Cook (basketball) and Isaac Serrano (football and wrestling).

“One of our goals in the NFA athletic department is to establish an understanding for the many benefits associated with being a part of our athletic programs,” Newburgh athletic director Jason Semo said. “Establishing a sense of community and a responsibility for giving back to others is part of the overall experience that we hope to instill in our student-athletes. The students involved in this program and their participation in this event are great examples of the new “Goldback Standard” that we are looking to establish in our athletes and our athletic programs at NFA.”

The National Education Association’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of famed children’s author Dr. Seuss. According to the NEA, motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.
