Section 9 boys golf: Rodriguez wins second title

Cornwall junior Ryan Rodriguez battled windy conditions to post the only sub-80 score at the Section 9 final round.

Rodriguez’s 7-over-par 79 was good enough for a three-stroke win and his second section title at Otterkill Golf and Country Club in Campbell Hall. He won the title as a freshman.

Rodriguez finished with a 36-hole total of 8-over 150. Spackenkill freshman Erik Stauderman was second with 11-over 153 (72-81).

Valley Central senior Brad Miller qualified for his first state tournament in his final attempt. Miller finished tied for fourth (73-87-160). Eldred junior David Powers will be making his third state trip after tying for fourth (77-83-160).

Kingston freshman Jake Hommel, the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association champion, overcame an 11 on the 7th hole to finish seventh (76-85-161) and make his first state tournament. Kingston senior Justin Theilig will also be making his first state trip after tying for eighth (76-88-164).

The state tournament will be held on May 30-June 1 at Cornell University in Ithaca.
