Bike for Cancer Care to honor Barnes

The 12th annual Bike for Cancer Care event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 20 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.

This year, the 50-mile ride will be renamed the Dan Barnes Memorial in honor of the late Kingston High football and lacrosse standout. Barnes passed away earlier this year at 30 after an 18-month battle with melanoma.

The Bike for Cancer Care includes a bike rodeo for youngsters, a family fun ride and rides of 12, 25 and 50 miles. A fundraiser for the Rosemary D. Gruner Memorial Cancer Fund, Bike for Cancer Care has helped provide financial support to over 1,450 cancer patients and their families. Since its inception in 2004, the event has raised over $900,000 and organizers hope to hit the $1 million mark this year.

Barnes went on to play both football and lacrosse at the University at Albany. After college he worked at an independent humanitarian organization in Madrid, Spain.

“Dan said he wanted his story used to help prevent cancer and cure it. He would be very pleased to have his name connected with the Bike for Cancer Care to support the Rosemary D. Gruner Memorial Cancer Fund, and to help cancer patients and their families in our community,” said Dan’s mother, Marie Barnes.
