A look at Saturday’s boys soccer state quarterfinal games

The state boys soccer tournament continues this weekend, with Cornwall, Webutuck and Mount Academy representing Section 9 in quarterfinal round action. Here is a look at each of the games. A version of this will run in Friday’s paper.

Cornwall senior midfielder Aiden O'Keefe (6) rushes to celebrate with sophomore midfielder Jacob Schulman (23), who just scored the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute of a state Class A opening round game against Vestal in Oneonta on Nov. 4, 2015. (WILL MONTGOMERY/TIMES HERALD-RECORD)

Class A
Cornwall (16-3-1) vs. Pearl River (18-2-0, Section 1)

(12:30 p.m. Saturday at Lakeland High School)

About Cornwall: The Green Dragons have been the comeback kids in each of their last three postseason games. Cornwall rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Red Hook in the Section 9 semifinals. In the championship game, a second half goal tied the score and allowed Cornwall to squeak past Goshen in penalty kicks. Jacob Schulman scored on a pair of direct kicks in the final seven minutes to lift Cornwall to a 2-1 win over Section 4 champion Vestal in the opening round of the state tournament in Oneonta on Wednesday.

About Pearl River: Pearl River became the first Class A team from Rockland County to win a Section 1 title in 10 years, topping Tappan Zee in the final. One Pearl River player to watch is senior defender Manuel Arango, who moved back from his traditional midfield position to cement the Pirates’ back line. Arango is also Pearl River’s set piece specialist, so he is dangerous all over the field.

Next up: The winner of this game advances to a state semifinal game in Middletown at 8:45 a.m. on Sat., Nov. 14. The winner of a quarterfinal between Section 2’s Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Section 3’s Syracuse-Fowler awaits.

Class C

Webutuck (8-8-1) vs. Solomon Schechter (11-4-2, Section 1)

(12 p.m. Saturday at Faller Field, Middletown)

About Webutuck: The No. 4 team in a four-team field, Webutuck beat No. 1 S.S. Seward in the semifinals and No. 2 Millbrook in the final to advance to the state tournament. It was Webutuck’s first Section 9 title since winning a Class D championship in 2012.

About Schechter: Miles Ogihara scored with less than two minutes to play in Schechter’s opening round win over Long Island champion Southold in the state opening round on Wednesday.

Next up: The winner of this game advances to a state semifinal game in Middletown at 11 a.m. on Sat., Nov. 14.

Class D

Mount Academy (16-0-0) vs. Fort Ann (20-0-0, Section 2)

(5 p.m. Saturday, Colonie High School)

About Mount Academy: In its second season as a varsity program, Mount Academy owns a pair of OCIAA Division VI regular season titles and two Section 9 Class D crowns. Last season, Mount Academy lost in overtime in the state championship game. Mount Academy might be a Class D school but the Eagles have some impressive wins on their resume, having beaten S.S. Seward twice, as well as John S. Burke Catholic and James I. O’Neill during the regular season.

About Fort Ann: The Cardinals, winners of six straight Section 2 titles, have outscored opponents 130-2 and have won 19 games by shutout. Fort Ann defeated Section 11 champion Smithtown Christian, 3-0, in a state opening round game on Long Island earlier this week.

Next up: The winner of this game advances to a state semifinal in Middletown at 12:30 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 14.
