Marlboro girls march on in state playoffs

By the time I got back to the office tonight, I saw that our online headline for Marlboro’s 61-60 win over No. 1-ranked Irvington in the opening round of the state Class B playoffs was “Marlboro pulls off shocking comeback win.”

That’s fair. Marlboro did erase a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat one of the state’s top Class B programs at the County Center in White Plains.

But comebacks are kind of Marlboro’s thing.

There was the MHAL Division II regular season win over Highland in which Marlboro trailed at the half.

There was the last-minute heroics of Missy Sadler in the MHAL championship game win over Pine Plains.

There was the seven-point halftime deficit against Highland in the Section 9 Class B semifinals in which sophomore Talaya Lewis and junior Taylor Felicello came up big in a second half surge.

Then, of course, there was Wednesday’s instant classic against Irvington.

Some teams say “Don’t count us out.”

Marlboro means it.

“I knew they had it in them,” said head coach Marion Casey. “I always know that they have it in them and I just kept waiting for it to click sooner than it did. I was still hoping in those last couple of moments that we’d come together and play like the team I know we can be.”

Check out the video above for some postgame reaction from seniors Missy Sadler and Julia Rusk, who were determined not to have their careers end Wednesday night.

Here is the game story.

Next up for Marlboro is Section 11 champion Mattituck (20-2) in a state Class B quarterfinal. The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. Admission is $7.

Mattituck was a 37-33 winner over Carle Place in the Long Island championship game on Tuesday and will play in the state quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

Marlboro snapped a 30-year drought by winning the Section 9 Class B title on Sunday. Before Wednesday’s comeback, the Dukes had last won a state playoff game in 1984. Marlboro won state titles in girls basketball in 1982 and 1984.

Pine Plains beat Haldane to advance to a state Class C quarterfinal game at 5 p.m. on Friday at Saint Joseph’s College.

Eldred will play a state Class D quarterfinal at Noon on Saturday at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh.

Monroe-Woodbury plays Section 1’s Ossining in a state Class AA quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at SUNY Orange. I will cover that game and you can get updates on Twitter: @THR_Montgomery.
