Eldred, Marlboro girls basketball teams head to Final Four

Eldred and Marlboro will represent Section 9 in the girls basketball Final Four – as will Dutchess County’s Pine Plains – this coming weekend at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. Here’s a look at how these teams got here and what they’ll be up against in the state semifinals.

THE OPPONENTS

About Westhill: The Syracuse-area champs will be an interesting matchup for Marlboro. Sisters Delaney and Mackenzie Martin and Mary Kate Washburn are Westhill’s “Big Three,” and they combined for 61 of Westhill’s 72 points in a 72-62 win over Seton Catholic in a Class B quarterfinal. Westhill’s only loss of the season came against Bishop Ludden on Dec. 10. Marlboro has its “Big Four” and also likes to play an up-tempo style so this should be a fun, high-scoring semifinal. For more on Westhill, check out this story from Syracuse.com.

About Livonia: Livonia rallied from a 7-point deficit with three minutes to play to beat Olean in the Far West championship game, 56-52. Check out more here from the Genesee Sun.

About Canton: The Golden Bears used an offensive putback and a defensive strip in the game’s final 30 seconds to beat Northeastern Clinton, 50-48, in a state quarterfinal game. The Watertown Daily Times has more here.

THE OPPONENTS

About Heuvelton: The defending state champions have had quite the encore. Heuvelton is undefeated and carries a 29-game winning streak into the state semifinals. In a state quarterfinal, Heuvelton had no problem with New York Mills, leading by as many as 29 in a 63-48 win over New York Mills. Junior Paige McCormick scored 22 points in the win. She is the reigning state Class D Player of the Year. The Watertown Daily Times has plenty more here.

About Fort Edward: The Flying Forts are no stranger to the state semifinals. This is the program’s fourth straight trip to the Final Four. Fort Edward was 16-of-26 at the line in a 35-19 win over Moriah in its state quarterfinal triumph. The man, the myth, the legend Pete Tobey¬†has more here in the Glens Falls Post Star.

About Panama: Panama was a 56-51 winner over Wheatland-Chili in the Far West final. Both Panama’s boys and girls teams are headed to the Final Four this upcoming weekend. The Buffalo News has more here.
