State golf: Powers five shots off lead

Eldred senior David Powers opened his fourth state tournament with a 4-over-par 75 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University in Ithaca.

Powers is tied for 12th place and five shots behind leader Nathan Han of Somers, who shot a 1-under 70 in the first round, which was delayed for more three hours by rain.

Roosevelt’s Jeff Peters, the Section 9 champion, carded a 1-over 72 and is tied for third place.

Cornwall senior Ryan Rodriguez, playing in his fifth state tournament, shot a 6-over 77 and is tied for 23rd.

The second and final round starts Monday morning.

Other Section 9 scores: Spackenkill senior Stanley Garrant (78, tied for 27th); Onteora junior Justin Lane (80, tied for 37th); Spackenkill sophomore Erik Stauderman (80, tied for 37th); Kingston sophomore Scott Kleeschulte (86, tied for 70th); Kingston sophomore Jake Hommel (87, tied for 72nd); Newburgh Free Academy eighth-grader Zain Jafar (90, tied for 85th).

Birdies: Peters 4; Stauderman 3; Powers 1; Rodriguez 1; Kleeschulte 1; Jafar 1; Garrant 1.
