Quick thoughts: Class AA final Pine Bush-Burke Catholic

Pine Bush won its first Section 9 title since 2000 behind a strong defensive effort against John S. Burke Catholic in the Class AA final Saturday.

Pine Bush held Burke Catholic to 17-of-57 shooting (29.8 percent). Burke Catholic was 3-of-23 from 3-point range.

Bench play didn’t decide the game as Pine Bush outscored Burke Catholic 4-3. But, senior forward D’Alton Dixon gave Pine Bush solid minutes off the bench in the first half. Dixon scored twice inside off passes from Marquis Johnson, who drove deep into Burke Catholic’s defense.

Pine Bush made its free throws down the stretch, hitting 8-of-11 in the fourth quarter. The Bushmen overcame a struggling shooting game for Brandon Powell, its leading scorer. Powell was 4-of-13 from the field and 0-for-5 from 3-point range. He made seven of his eight free throws.

Junior 6-foot-4 forward Bryan Powell made Pine Bush’s first 3-pointer with 6:38 left in the second quarter. Powell isn’t Pine Bush’s No. 1 option from distance but he’s extended his range this season.

Burke Catholic is the only team to hold Pine Bush under 60 points and the Eagles did it in both meetings. Pine Bush is averaging 82.7 points per game against the rest of its competition.

Pine Bush and Burke Catholic are both junior-lead teams. Burke Catholic graduates starting guard Pat Douthit and key reserve Sean Campbell. Pine Bush brings back Brandon Powell, Bryan Powell and Mason Memmelaar. Should be fun to watch them play next season.
