Quick thoughts: Class A final Goshen-Poughkeepsie

Goshen and Poughkeepsie’s Section 9 Class A final was a game for the ages.

The overtime thriller saw the teams combine for the most points (192) in a boys final in Section 9 tournament history.

The storylines made the game even more compelling. Goshen was seeking its first section title since 1993. Poughkeepsie was looking to claim its first and perhaps only section title as it moves back to Section 1 next season.

Heard that Ryan Lutz’s range extended far beyond the 3-point line.  The tip was right. Lutz made one 3-pointers from just a few steps past midcourt. The senior finished with a season-high 33 points and EIGHT 3-pointers.

Goshen got off a rocky start as Poughkeepsie scored the first seven points of the game. Lutz and junior 6-foot-5 forward Myles Ukoh kept the Gladiators in the game in the first half with 11 and 10 points respectively.

First time seeing Goshen sophomore point guard Zack Foley. Was impressed with the poise, toughness and the creativity of Foley. The majority of the 5-foot-8 Foley’s 15 points came off drives to the basket against a Poughkeepsie front line that included 6-foot-8, 295-pound center Corey Simmons.

With the game tied at 83-83 and 7.1 seconds in regulation, Goshen put the ball in Foley’s hands for the potential game-winner. Foley drove and his layup came up just short.

Poughkeepsie outscored Goshen 10-3 in the final 1:13 of overtime to pull out the win. The Gladiators were just 3-for-11 from the field in overtime.

Ultimately, free-throw shooting came back to bite Goshen. The Gladiators were 16-for-29 from the line and just 4-of-10 in the fourth quarter.
