Leach to play in Section 9 tennis tournament

Cornwall sophomore Dan Leach has received a medical waiver from Section 9 to compete in its tennis tournament after he was cleared to compete by a doctor Friday afternoon.

Leach defaulted and missed the qualifying Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association championship this week after becoming ill during a practice session Wednesday.

The waiver was granted based on the medical situation and Leach’s singles record (54-0 in the regular season) and his third trips to the state as a Section 9 doubles champion were also taken into consideration.

The Section 9 singles draw has one extra match now. Leach, who would have the No. 3 seed in the OCIAA tournament, will play Marlboro’s Claude Stephens in an outbracket match. The winner plays Kingston’s Bradley Hack in the round of 16.

Cornwall junior Lucas Arora earned the top seed in section tournament following his OCIAA singles title Friday. Onteora’s Tomas Pesko-West, the Mid-Hudson Athletic League champion, is the second seed. Goshen senior Lucas Irace, the OCIAA runnerup, is seeded third and Washingtonville junior Gavan O’Brien, third in the OCIAA, is the fourth seed.
