Kienz takes first-round lead at Section 9 tourney

Valley Central senior Josh Kienz fired his first under-par round in tournament play to grab the first-round lead at the Section 9 tournament.

Kienz made seven, yes seven, birdies including three in a row on holes 11, 12 and 13 to card a 1-under-par 69.

Burke Catholic coach Rich Welch, who was assigned to Kienz’s group, said it was the best high school golf round he’s ever seen.

Kienz leads Onteora senior Justin Lane by three strokes and defending champion Jeff Peters of Roosevelt by four strokes heading into the second and final round at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Casperkill Golf Club in Poughkeepsie.

Twenty-two golfers advance to Wednesday. The cutline was 85. Kienz will look to end a 17-year drought by Valley Central at the section tournament. Matt DeMaro was the school’s last section champion in 2000. Kienz will be joined by three teammates – Dylan Barone (74), Sean Adams (80) and Noah Conklin (85) – in the second round.

Kingston junior and OCIAA champion Scott Kleeschulte shot a 5-over 75 and is in fifth place.
