Notebook: Seward puts 5-game winning streak on line in state semifinal

S.S. Seward, which will play its first baseball game since May 26 Friday in the state Class D semifinal, nearly missed the Section 9 playoffs.

Bill Steele’s team was 8-9 after an 8-7 loss the Deposit-Hancock, the state’s top-ranked Class D team. The Spartans (13-9) won their last three regular-season games to secure a postseason berth.

“In the beginning of the season, we weren’t really playing as a team,” said junior second baseman Jack Gardiner. “During the end of the season, we really start to put our heads down and see where we had to go. We just started executing better and working as a team.”

Gardiner said the turning point of the season was a third loss to Eldred on May 11.

“We said just because we are wearing a Seward uniform doesn’t mean we are going to beat everybody so we really have to step our game up,” Gardiner said.

Seward will turn to sophomore pitcher Grant Gravelle against North Collins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Conlon Field. Here’s the preview story.

Sophomore Matt Stam said he hasn’t thrown much in Seward’s practice the last two weeks, saving his arm. Stam closes games for the Spartans and expects to be called upon be Steele in Friday’s semifinal. Steele said he will not extend Stam and that his closer will pitch a maximum of two innings.
