Girls soccer: A look at the preseason matchups

The Varsity 845 girls soccer season gets underway on Friday, August 25, when Colonie visits Washingtonville in the first non-league contest. Onteora travels to Watervliet the next evening, and Wallkill travels to Pine Bush on Tuesday, August 29, with the first meeting of two local squads.

In the meantime, there’s a host of scrimmages with the first coming three weeks from tomorrow, on Wednesday, August 23. Class AA champion Monroe-Woodbury will host eight schools, starting at 9 a.m., with a variety of mini-games planned. Scheduled to appear are Cornwall (Class A semifinalist), Washingtonville (Class AA semifinalist), Goshen (Class A champ), Valley Central, New Paltz and Middletown, plus Nanuet and Oneonta.
Also set to play that day are Catskill at Saugerties and Kingston at Red Hook (Class A runner-up) in 10 a.m. matchups and Beacon at Roosevelt at 6 p.m.
A couple of scrimmages that might be fun to watch will be the Aug. 28 meeting between defending Section 9 champs Goshen and host Monroe-Woodbury, and Class C semifinalist S.S. Seward will host seven schools on Aug. 29, which includes sectional Final Four teams Goshen, Warwick and Eldred.
