Bockman, McHale opt to play in USTA Junior tournaments

Two of the area’s top girls tennis players have decided to train and compete in United States Tennis Association junior tournaments over high school this fall.

The departure of two-time defending Section 9 champion Jane Bockman, a Goshen sophomore, and Valley Central junior Kortney McHalle, a 2016 state qualifier, makes Washingtonville freshman Jalynn Balleste one of the favorites to win the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association and Section 9 titles.

Cornwall’s Shirali Patel, Goshen junior Becky Andrews and Monroe-Woodbury seventh-grader Maeve Cassidy are some other names to watch.

Bockman was the 2015 and 2016 OCIAA singles champion.
