2017 Section 9 girls tennis round of 16, quarterfinal results

Washingtonville freshman Jalynn Balleste rolled into the Section 9 semifinals, dropping just one game in two matches at Match Point Tennis in Goshen.

Balleste, the top seed and Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association champion, defeated Roosevelt’s Ashleigh Dolan 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and blanked New Paltz’s Ariana Rodriguez 6-0, 6-0. She will play Cornwall’s Shirali Patel, a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) winner over fourth-seeded Emily Savage of Wallkill, in a semifinal at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Match Point.

Monroe-Woodbury seventh-grader Maeve Cassidy was impressive in her first section tournament. Cassidy lost just two games in two wins. She defeated Goshen’s Becky Andrews 6-0, 6-2 to reach the semifinals. Kingston eighth-grader Lila Shih Freeman, Cassidy’s semifinal opponent, topped second-seed Grace Messenger of Marlboro, the Mid-Hudson Athletic League champion, 6-3, 7-5.

Top-seeded Jackie Grundfast and Ava Ghobadian of Warwick outlasted their teammates Gabby Donohue and Samantha Killin 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a quarterfinal match that lasted two hours and 22 minutes.

Grundfast and Ghobadian play Cornwall’s Marina Blumenschein and Meg Nielsen in a semifinal at 10 a.m. Friday at Match Point.

Unseeded Ali Dratch and Bianca Harris of Valley Central, who knocked off second-seeded Isabelle Goings-Perrot and Riddhi Patel of Newburgh Free Academy in the quarterfinals, play Warwick’s Uliana Kitar and Stephanie Menoutis in the other semifinal.
