2017-18 Boys Basketball Capsules

Opening tip for the 2017-18 boys basketball season is just one day away.

Sullivan West and Tri-Valley play in the first round of the Walton tournament Monday.

Defending Section 9 Class AA champion Pine Bush opens its season at Roosevelt Wednesday.

The schedule kicks into full swing Friday with Kingston hosting its RYAN (Raise Your Awareness on Narcotics) tournament. Kingston hosts Poughkeepsie and Goshen and Saugerties, two of the section’s top Class A team, clash in the first round.

OCIAA Division I
Kingston
Coach: Ron Kelder (22nd season)
2016-17 record: 10-10

Middletown
Coach: Jim Kelly (9th season)
2016-17 record: 11-10

Monroe-Woodbury

Coach: Dave Powers (2nd season)
2016-17 record: 11-10

Coach’s outlook: “Looking to build off of the success we had year as we qualified for sections. Tough division, tough schedule.”

Pine Bush
Coach: Stephen Distefano (7th season)
2016-17 record: 21-1, Section 9 Class AA champions
Top returning players: Sr. F Mason Memmelaar; Sr. G Brandon Powell; Sr. F Bryan Powell
Key losses: G Marquis Johnson, 2017 Varsity 845 player of the year, transferred to Mount Zion (N.C.) Academy; G Jahri Evans; F D’Alton Dixon.
Coach’s outlook: “We want to continue being competitive and make sections again and go from there.”

OCIAA Division II
Burke Catholic
Coach: John Kelly (2nd season)
2016-17 records: 19-4 (8-0 Division II)
Top returning players: Sr. G Tommy Garneau; Sr. G Andre Paul; Sr. F Jake Pawliczak; Sr. F Kenny Primus.
Key losses: G Pat Douthit (Misericordia); G Sean Campbell (Adelphi)
Coach’s outlook: “We return four starters from last year’s team.  Hope to be in the mix again this year.”

Minisink Valley
Coach: Matt Caputo
2016-17 record: 4-16
Top returning players: Sr. G Matt Koval; Sr. F Elijah Reece; Sr. F Ian Guyette; Sr. F Reece Hernandez; Sr. G Syncere Allah.
Key losses: Richie Cummings; Tom Dawson; Chris Alfano; Sebastian Gonzalez.
Coach’s outlook: “We have a good mix of returners and underclassmen. Our success will depend on our ability to improve every day and learn play hard, smart and together.”

Warwick

Coach: Joe Mackey (1st season)
2016-17 record: 8-12

Washingtonville
Coach: Todd Rose (12th season, 126-95)
2016-17 season: 13-9

Coach’s outlook: “With nine newcomers and only five returners, we are still looking to return to the section Class AA tournament with the leadership of my two captains Ryan Johnson and Brendan O’Leary. We will play hard, smart and unselfishly.”

OCIAA Division III

Cornwall
Coach: Tom Howe (31st season)
2016-17 record: 6-16 (3-3 Division III)

OCIAA Division VI
Eldred
Coach: David Binkowski (3rd season)
Record: 7-11

Coach’s outlook: “We have a very young team this year. It will be a work in progress but our goal is to get better every practice, every quarter, every game and every day.”

Livingston Manor
Coach: Adam Larson (2nd season)
2016-17 record: 10-8
Top returning players: Sr. C Josh Evans; Sr. G Allan Ward
Key losses: G Chris Alexander; C Dylan Smith; F Devon Heintz; G Jake Budd.
Top newcomers: Jr. G Jarrett Simpson; Jr. G Juniper Brown.
Coach’s outlook: “With several seniors graduating, we will need someone to step up as the team leader.  We have some real good looking talent coming up from the jayvee program and they have been impressive in practice.  We’ll see how that translates once the season begins.  I’m very optimistic about our possibilities this season as we have a good mix of talent.”

S.S. Seward
Coach: Rob Gravelle (23rd season)
2016-17 season: 19-5, Section 9 Class D champions, state Class D quarterfinalists

Key losses: G Joe Nugent.
Coach’s outlook: “We have a lot of experience returning from last year. We expect to compete in every game and and to be in the mix for sectionals at the end of the season.”

Saugerties
Coach: Mike Tiano (12th season)
2016-17 record: 10-11
Top returning players: Eighth-grader G Dior Johnson; Sr. G Austin Curlin; Sr. G Tavin Rell; Jr. F Caleb Edwards; Jr. F Liam Schoonmaker.
Key losses: F Keith Hartrum; G Omar Mazariego.
Coach’s outlook: “We are looking forward to strong competition again this year. Starting off the season playing in a tournament against Goshen , Kingston, and Poughkeepsie. Then we have the opportunity to play Middletown at SUNY New Paltz.”

Lackawanna League

Delaware Valley (Pa.)
Coach: Kris Holtzer (12th season)
2016-17 record: 14-9
